Some history

The origins

The word Trullo comes from the Greek “trullos” which means dome. The Trulli are ancient and rural constructions built by local farmers and were constructed with local stones with a conical roof covered with small chalky stones.

The conical roof makes unique such constructions: stone after stones in concentric rings which decrease towards a hole at the top, closed through a circular monolith on which a pinnacle with bizarre and mysterious shapes rises up (crosses, stars, spheres and other symbols with a Christian or propitiatory meaning).

The richest farmers used to own groups of Trulli for living and working needs, some Trulli were used for farm tools, baskets and clay vases for the conservation of oil, wine and cereals. During the summer periods, farmers need to move to the country to avoid the summer hot and rest  after a long year of hard work (in fact inside the Trullo the air is naturally fresh thanks to the stone structure and thick walls).

And this represents the first example of vacation in a Trullo, which is still so much loved today by tourists thanks to the charm of such an ancient and historical home.
